Quick Repair of Exhaust Fans Thanks to FAG Detector III:

F'IS Trouble Shooting Restores a Tanker's Operability

A tanker had already spent 14 days in port because two exhaust fans were defective. With the help of FAG Detector III, the all-rounder for monitoring and balancing machine elements, FAG Industrial Services GmbH was able to repair the damage quickly and restore the ship's operability.

Herzogenrath, November 11, 2008. A 228 meter long ship with twelve tanks and a capacity of almost 80,000 cubic metres is lying in port and can neither be unloaded nor continue its journey. The reason: two exhaust fans are defective. These are needed for operating the tanker's power supply system. If they do not work properly, they prevent operation of critical systems. No technicians who could have fixed the problem quickly were available on location. A nightmare for an internationally operating German shipping company that tried for two weeks in vain to repair the damage. Each of these two weeks cost the company EUR 300,000. The full service provider manages a fleet of more than 30 ships, moves about 1.3 million tons of cargo a week and provides the full range of services from shipbuilding to providing crew personnel to the handling of all administrative tasks.

FAG Industrial Services GmbH (F'IS), which takes responsibility for Schaeffler Group Industrial's worldwide service business regarding the INA and FAG brands, was able to help fast. The company, headquartered in Herzogenrath near Aachen, sent a technician who quickly determined the cause of the problem - an imbalance of fan impellers - with the help of FAG Detector III and eliminated it at once. In addition, the shipping company was given recommendations how such failures can be avoided by regular cleaning and vibration measurements. Any damage to one of these important systems can prevent a tanker from continuing its journey.

The FAG Detector III is a very easy to operate, handy device which permits comprehensive machine monitoring by means of vibration and temperature diagnosis as well as repair by static or dynamic balancing directly on site. Typical applications include the monitoring and balancing of pumps, electric motors, fans, machine tools and compressors. Thanks to the drag & drop feature, measuring points can be easily defined. Data are recorded in an efficient manner as the measuring points can be identified automatically by means of RFID technology. The new plug and play function enables even persons without any experience in vibration measurement to obtain important information about a machine's condition. Moreover, the licence-free analysis software offers numerous options for analysing the measured data. A report generator, which can be adapted to a customer's specific requirements, guarantees that measurement results can be presented in a customized form. If a customer needs help, the F'IS support department is available for personal assistance.
