FAG WiPro s certified by Germanischer Lloyd

HERZOGENRATH, July 11, 2011. The high quality of the online condition monitoring system FAG WiPro s has recently been confirmed by Germanischer Lloyd Wind Industrial Services GmbH (GL Wind). This certification proves that the Schaeffler Group’s monitoring system fully meets the special requirements of the wind power industry. Wind turbine operators that protect their plants with an FAG WiPro s benefit twice. They can not only be certain of the product’s high quality but may also be rewarded by their insurance companies with discounts or other types of benefit.

Certificate confirms particular suitability for wind power plants
The renowned certification body GL Wind tested and certified the FAG WiPro s for the requirements in the wind power industry. As part of that extensive testing, the system’s structure, functionality and documentation were evaluated. The requirements on a monitoring system in a wind turbine differ fundamentally from those in other industries. Complex gearboxes, comparatively ’soft’ support structures, superimposed vibrations from a variety of causes as well as drastically changing operating conditions represent particularly challenging demands on the monitoring of wind turbines, which often are widely scattered over a large area.

FAG WiPro s masters the challenges optimally
In the wind power industry, a monitoring system has to monitor a large number of measuring points - as well as the measured data - at the same time. This poses the following challenges: The system must handle the transmission of these large amounts of data with regard to time and cost. In addition, it has to keep track of the large amounts of data and still identify emerging damage quickly and reliably. Moreover, as insurance companies do not accept any gaps in the monitoring data, the system is expected to ensure full documentation. The FAG WiPro s is a monitoring system that transmits all relevant information, such as spectra, time signals and characteristic value trends, in a relatively small data volume of about 500 kB per turbine and day.

Service concepts for the wind power industry
The Schaeffler Group offers a number of flexible FAG WiPro s related service concepts - from training of customers’ personnel in the independent operation of the system to longterm service contracts including remote monitoring and remote diagnosis. In the latter version, the Schaeffler Group also archives all monitoring data on customer request, which meets another important insurance requirement.

Proven quality - new design
The FAG WiPro s was introduced on the market last year. The system, which is customized for monitoring tasks in the wind power industry, is based on the successful predecessor model FAG WiPro. That model was also certified by GL Wind and is used successfully in many applications around the world. The new model offers all of its’ predecessor’s proven features as well as several new ones, and is smaller and more compact. That not only makes installation easier but also offers a significantly higher flexibility as space in a nacelle is very confined.
